Built-Up – Commercial Roofing Richardson

Layer 1: Base Sheet

  • (This process can be repeated for a greater warranty) Is used for both hot and cold applied, inorganic built-up roofing systems. It is suitable for use in the construction of various types of membranes for both new construction and re-roofing, when used as the first ply over nailable, non-nailable and insulated substrates. In addition, it will perform as a venting base sheet when spot mopped over plastic foam type insulations. Base sheet will provide additional strength, moisture resistance and asphalt uniformity.

Layer 2:Venting Base Sheet

  • Is designed for use as a buffer sheet over existing roofing membranes in lieu of a divorcing layer of roof insulation on re-cover projects where the existing roofing membrane is left in place. It is suitable for use over existing gravel, mineral or smooth surfaced roof systems and is substituted for the base ply of the new membrane.

Layer 3: Cap Sheet or CertainTeed Flintglas Mineral Surfaced Cap Sheet CoolStar or Gravel Surface

  • Cap Sheet is designed for use as a buffer sheet over existing roofing membranes in lieu of a divorcing layer of roof insulation on re-cover projects where the existing roofing membrane is left in place. It is suitable for use over existing gravel, mineral or smooth surfaced roof systems and is substituted for the base ply of the new membrane.
  • CertainTeed Flintglas Mineral Surfaced Cap Sheet CoolStar is a mineral surfaced fiber glass cap sheet with reflective CoolStar granules. It is a roll roofing product designed for use as a cap sheet over inorganic and organic built-up roofing systems.
  • Gravel Surface is also considered a flood coat as the final Cap Sheet. A primer is applied to the final base sheet first, then kegs of tar are melted in a roofing kettle at high temperatures and mopped on to the base sheet surface. Gravel is then applied as the top and final cap sheet. Special metal, called knuckle guard is needed to help keep the gravel from blowing off the roof surface in high winds. Knuckle guard is also considered commercial drip edge and comes in many sizes.
