Types of Roofs, their Pros, and Cons

When retrofitting an existing house or building a new one, selecting the right roof style and shape is the best finish that complements your cozy project. Roofs serve more than the basic practical purpose of protecting the occupants and the entire house from external elements. They define the overall look and style of the house. But what are some of the types of roofs, their pros and cons?

Pros and Cons of Different Roof Types

1.    Gable Roof

Gable roofs are the most popular and are known for their triangular shape.

Pros: They efficiently shed snow and water, provide more space for vaulted or attic ceilings and allow more ventilation. They are simple designs that are cheap and easy to build.

Cons: If the frames are poorly constructed with few supports, they can be destroyed easily by extreme winds.

2.    Hip Roof

A hip roof is a roof with four equal sides that converge at the apex to form a ridge.

Pros: They are much more stable compared to gable roofs. The four equal sides have an inward slope, making the roof more durable and sturdier. The slanting shape of the roof allows snow and water to slide off easily. They are therefore excellent for both snowy and high wind areas. They offer extra living space due to their additional dormers.

Cons: Hip roofs have relatively complex designs and are more expensive to build than a gable roof. If the roofing system is not correctly installed, the additional seams allow water to leak into the valleys.

3.     Flat Roofs

Flat roofs appear to be flat, as the name suggests. They have a very slight pitch to ensure easy drainage.

Pros: The roof offers extra living space for garden or patio rooms. Their flat surfaces allow easy installation of heating and cooling units, especially in commercial roof designs. They have simple designs which are easy to construct and less expensive.

Cons: flat roofs are very susceptible to water leakage due to their flat or low pitch. They are not suitable for high snowfall or high rainfall areas. They are expensive in the long run due to frequent maintenance, replacement, and roof repairs.
